Bihar Municipal Elections: Women Win 458 Ward Councilor, Mayor, and Deputy Mayor Positions

The State Election Commission announced the results of the Bihar municipal elections on Sunday, revealing that women had won 458 positions, including those of ward councillor, mayor, and deputy mayor.

Additionally, 347 male candidates were declared elected for various positions in 31 municipalities across 21 districts by the Bihar State Election Commission (SEC), for which elections were conducted on June 9.

In a setting of strict security, the counting of ballots for 31 local bodies in the state started at 8 am on Sunday.

For the purpose of tallying the votes cast for the 805 positions of mayor and deputy mayor, 58 centers in total had been established. On Sunday night, the SEC announced the results of the Bihar Nagar Nikay elections. In all, 4,431 candidates—2,197 men and 2,234 women—ran for office in Bihar’s municipal elections. Nine of them were previously known to be unchallenged winners. Patna, Buxar, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Vaishali, Nalanda, Nawada, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Munger, Lakhisarai, Saharsa, Jamui, and Banka districts all participated in the voting. For the first time, the SEC verified voters’ identities using a facial recognition system (FRS).

According to officials, there will be elections for 31 urban local bodies, including 24 for which there were no elections in the most recent urban elections conducted in December and another seven whose five-year terms are coming to an end in June. This includes the municipal corporations of Saharsa and Madhubani. In addition, by-elections were conducted in seven wards of urban local bodies when elected officials left their positions in the months after the December elections for cities.
