According to reports, Delhi, the nation’s capital, had a worsening in the air quality on Saturday and fell into the “poor” category. The air quality index (AQI), as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), was 224.

Government of Delhi holds a meeting
On Friday, the Delhi government called a joint meeting of the states and the Center and requested that the Union Environment Ministry enact a blanket ban on both the movement of diesel buses within the National Capital Region (NCR) and the lighting of fireworks.

This action follows the publishing of a research by the Center for Science and the Environment (CSE), an independent think tank, which claimed that 31% of Delhi’s pollution comes from sources within the national capital and 69% comes from sources in the NCR states.

The top 10 most polluted cities were identified earlier this month by a survey conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), with Delhi ranking first in India.

The NCR cities of Delhi, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Meerut topped the list, followed by Patna and Muzaffarpur in Bihar.
