Government will taste test every spice brand to ensure quality
The Center on Monday directed food safety commissioners across states to sample spices of all brands for quality testing, after the bans on certain items manufactured and promoted by Indian spice firms MDH and Everest in Singapore and Hong Kong.
“The nation’s commissioners for food safety have all been informed. The first step in the spice tasting process has started. All production plants will have their spice samples gathered in around four days, according to FSSAI sources.
They said that samples will be collected of all brands, not just MDH and Everest, and that the quality assessment would be ready in around 20 days. The Indian Spices Board is also investigating the restrictions that Singapore and Hong Kong have put in place. — TNS
HK and Singapore flag issues
Hong Kong has alerted consumers about three MDH and Everest’s Fish Curry Masala items that contain excessively high concentrations of ethylene oxide, a substance known to cause cancer. Everest’s Fish Curry Masala has also been recalled, per an order from Singapore.
