Threads’ meta-testing messaging feature: Everything you need know

On its competitor app Threads, X (previously Twitter), Meta is trying a new feature. Users will be able to start new messages from the Threads using the under-testing functionality. Since the platform’s launch, the functionality has been absent. Users will be able to message other platform users with this feature.

A representative for meta told Engadget that the functionality was live on the app and that the business was “testing the ability to send a message from Threads to Instagram.”
Although it still depends on Instagram’s inbox, users may now start messages directly from the app. It replaces the “mention” button and is accessible at the top of the user’s profile. The “message” button is the new one.

Currently, a few Threads users can access it. Additionally, Lucus Pushkaric, a Threads user, noticed the functionality and shared it on the platform.

“Wait—what?” In the Threads article, Lucus said, “The mention button has been replaced with a MESSAGE button to send a DM from Threads to IG instantaneously.

Direct messaging in threads
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has repeatedly said that the business does not want to establish a separate inbox for Threads, which is currently without an inbox of its own. He also highlighted that there would be issues with notification routing and duplicate message threads in two distinct applications if the Instagram inbox was mirrored in Threads.

Despite not having a complete direct texting capability, Threads makes texting less complicated by letting users send messages without having to go to Instagram. However, users will have to use the Instagram app in order to see or reply to such messages.

In the meantime, Threads’ “trending now” functionality has also been released by Meta. This feature offers insight into the kinds of discussions taking place inside Threads. Mark Zuckerberg revealed the functionality in a Threads post.
