At Mumbai’s Vile Parle neighborhood on Wednesday, the 3rd Late Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award celebration honored several notable artists from the Hindi, Marathi, and Tamil film industries. It was an evening to remember.

The Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award was given to veteran Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan in recognition of his outstanding achievements to the film industry over the course of a career spanning more than five decades.

The 81-year-old Bachchan accepted the honor on the day of Deenanath Mangeshkar’s memorial, who was the father of the Mangeshkar siblings and a seasoned veteran of theater and music. Bachchan received the award from singer Usha Mangeshkar, the third oldest of the Mangeshkar siblings.

As he collected the trophy on stage in front of other dignitaries, the song “Lag Jaa Gale” was playing.

At one function, the actor said, he began speaking in Hindi and was hailed with a loud applause from the crowd that yelled, “Aye Marathi Marathi.”

“Mi Marathi shikat aahe (I’m learning Marathi),” the Big B retorted.

In addition to receiving accolades for his work on the record for Imtiaz Ali’s film “Amar Singh Chamkila,” Oscar and Grammy-winning composer A.R. Rahman was also presented with the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award in recognition of his services to the music industry.
