Director Samik Roy Choudhury: As a Bengali, I believe it’s time for us to take a stand and demonstrate our abilities to Anurag Kashyap

Renowned director Samik Roy Choudhury, of “Okiagari” and “Mushroom,” is back with “Beline,” his next film. Beline, a psychological thriller that speaks to the current generation, stars veteran Bengali actor Paran Bandopadhyay in a role that has never been seen before. Tathagata Mukherjee and Sreya Bhattacharyya play important roles in the movie as well. On March 6, Samik and the rest of the cast and crew of the movie released the trailer for Beline.

The story of Beline centers on an elderly, single man who lives a solitary, retired life. Paran Bandopdhyay plays this character. His daily activities include playing video games like Ludo indoors and watching TV serials. His life turns around when he receives a call one day from the incorrect number. That phone call turns into a portal into the lives of that girl and her live-in partner. An interesting conversation that lasted for up to three days provides an eccentric voyeur’s perspective on the guy’s struggle, the girl’s suffering, and their equation. In the event of a line disconnect, what happens?

Similar to the previous poster, Beline’s trailer revealed a number of unexpected details to the viewer. This movie, according to director Samik, is a love project that he has been working on for nearly ten years. Samik states to ETimes, “I had the idea in the beginning of 2015.” The narrative held my attention. The screenplay was prepared. However, it took me some time to locate a producer willing to back a movie such as Beline. I met Harit Ratna Ji just as I was about to give up hope completely. Not once did his focus waver while I was pitching the story. History is what’s left. We are grateful to our producer, Harit Ratna Ji, for granting us complete creative freedom. In 2021, Beline’s filming finally got underway.

Bengali cinema has been in the news recently due to a comment made by well-known director Anurag Kashyap regarding the declining caliber of the genre. Kashyap asserts that if Bengali filmmakers produce high-caliber movies, they won’t need to continuously persuade viewers to watch them. Samik responds, “My personal opinion is whether or not I agree with his remark.” However, I believe it’s time for us to rise to the occasion and demonstrate to him our abilities as Bengali filmmakers. Additionally, Samik is in favor of closing the divide between independent and commercial films. He has collaborated with a well-known independent musician from Kolkata, Tamal Kanti Halder, on Beline. Tamal thinks that the distinction between mainstream and art films won’t really matter as long as they adhere to the aesthetic and don’t make any storytelling compromises. With great pride, John Williams Tamal composed the music for Beline, drawing inspiration from the likes of Hans Zimmer.
Sayan, a former RJ who became an actor in the movie “Happy to Disturb,” and Sandeep Bhattacharya also play significant roles in Beline. Theaters will open to see the movie on March 29.
