Imtiaz Ali explains why he didn’t glorify Amar Singh Chamkila in the movie and acknowledges that he wasn’t a “neat, clean” guy

Following the overwhelming excellent reception that both the public and critics gave his newly released film Amar Singh Chamkila, Imtiaz Ali is now enjoying great success. The film, which is a biography of well-known Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, who was shot dead in 1988 along with his wife, has Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the key roles.

The supposed motive for Chamkila’s murder, which has been made public in the past and included in movies, was his double-meaning songs, which offended a specific demographic. Some of the singer’s unpolished and below-the-belt songs were also included in Imtiaz’s film.

Why did Imtiaz Ali’s biopic not exalt Amar Singh Chamkila?
Ali, who made his biopic debut with this one, said he never imagined he would direct a biopic. What, therefore, made Amar Singh Chamkila unique?

“There were so many things in Chamkila’s story that I felt I should address since they’ve been hidden from the audience,” Imtiaz said to Midday. But you should be free to portray someone’s life in whatever way you see fit, without altering the facts in any way. What good does it do to exalt them if you don’t expose their mistakes?

Imtiaz Ali went on to say that he finds it “extremely boring” when biopics continuously exalt the subject of their story. Since Chamkila was a vocalist who experienced both love and hatred in equal measure, Imtiaz felt compelled to show Chamkila’s humanity.

He went on, “I didn’t want to portray him as this tidy and orderly guy, which he wasn’t. This is also because I was aware of a couple of his inherent virtues. He is not perfect.

Imtiaz said that he would not have been relatable if he had exalted Chamkila. “There are times when a character’s imperfections and abnormalities make them endearing to the audience,” he said. When people realize that this individual is a person, they are able to identify with and support them.
