Expert: Summer heat exacerbates brain disorders

Prayagraj: Dr. Prabhat Singh, an associate professor in the neurology department at MLN Medical College, said on Thursday that a number of disorders might manifest in the summer and that there was also a possibility that pre-existing neurological conditions could worsen at this time.

According to Dr. Singh, “heat stroke is one of the most feared summertime health issues. It occurs when the body’s thermo-regulatory system malfunctions and body temperature rises to the dangerous point of stopping brain function, leading to coma.” The affected person also experiences headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
But he said that while there was a higher risk of brain stroke during very hot weather, there may also be behavioural changes, including impatience, disorientation, and loss of focus.

However, he gave the public advice to contact friends or relatives to drop someone off at home, drive cautiously without losing your cool, and refrain from driving after ingesting alcohol or other intoxicants.
The doctor advised wearing protective glasses, covering yourself appropriately, moisturising your skin, and using herbal hues if you were planning a colourful party.
Patients suffering from neurological conditions were recommended to avoid the sun, he added, since sunlight and intense heat are typical causes of headaches.
According to the specialist, people with inflammatory neuropathy and multiple sclerosis may experience worsening of their symptoms. A myasthenia gravis patient may have their first illness episode in the summer. Summertime is a common time for many neurodegenerative disease symptoms, such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s. As such, people with these conditions should aim to avoid being in the sun, heat, or excessive amounts of coffee and alcohol, as well as exerting themselves or playing sports during the hottest portions of the day.
During the summer, people are encouraged to drink plenty of water, dress in light-coloured clothing and linen, and seek cover while they are outside.
