A $95 billion assistance package for Israel and Ukraine has been approved by the US Senate

The package, according to President Joe Biden, “sends a message to the world about the power of American leadership,” and he plans to sign it into law on Wednesday.

 

including a resounding majority, the US Senate has approved a foreign assistance package of $95 billion (€88 billion), including specific allocations for Taiwan, Israel, and Ukraine.

After passing the House of Representatives on Saturday, the law was finally approved by the Senate by a vote of 79 to 18 late Tuesday night.

Months of postponement and discussion about the level of US involvement in foreign conflicts preceded its approval.

After collaborating with legislative leaders to get support, President Joe Biden said in a statement that he will sign the measure into law on Wednesday. He also promised to immediately begin the process of supplying weaponry to Ukraine, a country that has been battling to maintain its frontlines against Russia.

Humanitarian aid for Gaza’s Palestinian population and military aid for Israel total $26 billion (€24 billion) in the package.

An allocation of $8 billion (€7 billion) has been made to address potential Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific area and on Taiwan.

Chuck Schumer, leader of the Senate Democratic Party, and Mitch McConnell, leader of the Senate Republican Party, agreed to bundle assistance to Israel and Ukraine in order to increase the likelihood that the measure would pass the Senate.
