French chefs break world records by topping pizza with 1001 varieties of cheese

Do you like your pizza topped with a lot of cheese? You’ll be happy to hear about a special pizza that just shattered a Guinness World Record (GWR) if you value variety above quantity. Not ten or fifty, but one thousand kinds of cheese were affixed to it. French pizza chefs Fabien Montellanico and Benoit Bruel developed this beautiful feast. The cheesemaker Sophie Hatat Richart-Luna and the YouTuber Florian OnAir supported them in their endeavors. With 834 distinct cheesy toppings on his pizza in 2021, Morgan Niquet held the previous record for the most variations of cheese on a pizza.

Are you wondering how the squad contained the pizza? Benoit disclosed that in order to support the weight of the toppings, the pizza dough was partially baked beforehand. First, the harder cheeses went on the bottom of the dish, and then the softer cheeses went on top. A cube weighing two grams represented each variety. Additionally, according to GWR, “the mound of cheese was held together while it cooked by placing a cookie cutter around it.” Two minutes later, the pizza was taken out of the oven and given a further twenty seconds to bake.

“It’s been a real feat being among the cheesemakers as well as being on the farms to meet the producers who are so passionate about their profession,” Benoit said to GWR. The official website states that 940 of the cheeses used on the pizza were French, with the remaining 61 coming from other nations. Benoit has contributed to the establishment of this specific record before. He had created a pizza in 2020 that had 254 different types of cheese on top. According to GWR, he “spent five months scouring France for more varieties of cheese,” which contributed to his new record.
