In the midst of record-breaking rain and wind, China evacuates the whole town

Beijing: A town in Guangdong province with over 1,700 inhabitants had to be evacuated due to severe weather that included near-hurricane force winds, hail, and unceasing rain, according to local media on Thursday.
As a fresh wave of floodwaters came in, all inhabitants of Jiangwan township in the Shaoguan area were reportedly evacuated to safety using buses and helicopters, according to reports from local officials.

Jiang, a 72-year-old local who wished to be recognized only by his last name, said, “I have never seen such heavy rain in my life, nor have people older than me,” according to state-run China Daily.

The area has seen catastrophic mudslides, inundated houses, collapsed bridges, broken power lines, and interrupted mobile phone networks as a consequence of the extreme weather.
Known as the “factory floor of the world,” Guangdong province has seen images of extensive destruction over the last week as many local rainfall records for the month of April have been broken.
Social media users shared the horrifying scenes from a restaurant in Guangzhou, the province capital, where patrons stared in dismay as trees were uprooted by hurricane-force winds and the streets outside were hammered by downpours of rain.
Due to its summer flood vulnerability, Guangdong was forced to evacuate hundreds of thousands of residents in June 2022 after experiencing the worst rains in 60 years.
At least four people have died as a result of the current storm outbreak, which is being blamed on both the El NiƱo weather phenomena and a subtropical high pressure system that is cycling north of the equator and stronger than usual.
According to weather forecasters, the region’s rainfall and wind speeds have increased due to the higher temperatures that have pulled in moisture-laden air from the South China Sea and even as far as the Bay of Bengal.
