Putin vows to protect Russia in the face of the mercenary chief’s violent uprising

In a Saturday speech to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin swore to protect the nation and its citizens from an armed uprising announced by mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Putin referred to the mutiny as “a deadly threat to our statehood” and promised “tough actions” in retaliation. “Everyone who helped organise the uprising will face unavoidable retribution. The required instructions have been given to the military forces and other government organisations, according to Putin.

Without mentioning the owner of the Wagner private military group by name, he referred to Prigozhin’s activities as “a betrayal” and “a treason.”

He pleaded with “those who are being dragged into this crime to not make a fatal and tragic, unique mistake, to make the only right choice — to stop participating in criminal acts.”

At a time when Russia was “fighting the toughest battle for its future” in the Ukraine conflict, Putin denounced the uprising. “The entire military, economic, and information machine of the West is waged against us,” declared Putin.

“This battle requires the unification of all forces, unity, consolidation, and responsibility at a time when the fate of our people is at stake.” A violent uprising now would be “a blow to Russia, to its people,” the president said.

“Russia was betrayed by those who planned and coordinated an armed uprising and took up weapons against his colleagues. And they will face consequences for it, added Putin.
