Russian attack on Chernigiv, Ukraine, claimed eight lives: mayor

Eight people were killed and over a dozen injured in a Russian hit on the Ukrainian city of Chernigiv in the north on Wednesday, as Kyiv is pleading with allies for improved air defense systems.

Partially under Russian occupation at the start of the invasion, the Chernigiv region borders Belarus to the north. Since Moscow’s soldiers retreated, the area has been spared heavy warfare for around two years.

The strike had torn through a “very populated area” of the city, according to Mayor Oleksandr Lomako, who spoke to state television.

“Russian missile attacks on Chernigiv have left eight people dead and eighteen wounded. He said, “Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing.

The mayor said that an eight-story building sustained significant damage in the impact, and that there was a direct hit to an infrastructure facility.

Lomako said that the destroyed facility had nothing to do with the generation of electricity, despite the fact that Russian soldiers have been attacking Ukraine’s energy system more often in recent weeks.

“Citizens were impacted by Russian terrorist attacks on Chernigiv,” posted on social media by Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office.

“The fear has to end. Right now, Ukraine needs air and missile defense,” he said.

The pre-war population of Chernigiv city, which is located around 145 kilometers (90 miles) north of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was estimated to be 285,000.

In February 2022, Russian tanks entered Ukraine from Belarusian border, causing damage to several structures in the city.

Ukraine has been pleading with its international partners to provide it with more advanced air defense systems so that it can prevent Russia from consistently attacking its vital infrastructure.

When locals were being evacuated from the village of Ocheretyne, which is close to Avdiivka town in the Donetsk region, on April 15, 2024, amid the Russian invasion in Ukraine, special police force “White Angel” officers Hennadiy Yudin 47 (L) and Dmytro Solovyi 23 (R) were walking past damaged buildings and debris.
