What Are Some Ways To Prevent Heatstroke? Physician Indicates Preventive Actions

It’s crucial to take preventative measures against heat stroke in the summer to ensure your safety and well-being. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially if you intend to go outside or participate in strenuous exercise. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes to protect yourself from the sun’s rays; apply high-SPF sunscreen to avoid being sunburned; and wear a wide-brimmed hat to keep out the sun.

As the day heats up, try to avoid being outside as much and instead take frequent breaks in cool places or air conditioning. Due to the sudden rise in temperature, stay away from intense physical activity when it’s really hot, and never leave kids or pets alone in parked automobiles.

Dr. Ranga Santhosh Kumar, a diabetologist and consultant general physician at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, shared his knowledge on proactive steps to protect health and avoid heat stroke in an interview with Jagran English.

Heat Stroke: What Is It?
Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related condition, according to Dr. Ranga. It happens when the body can no longer control its temperature; as a result, the body cannot cool down, sweating systems malfunction, and body temperature increases quickly. Body temperatures may rise to 106°F or more in ten to fifteen minutes due to heat stroke. A heat stroke may result in death or lifelong disability if care is not received immediately.

What Preventative Steps Are Needed to Avoid Heat Stroke?
Dress appropriately. Wear loose-fitting, light clothing.

Electric fans may be cozy, but when the temperature is in the upper 90s, they don’t do much to stop heat-related diseases. Instead, find a cool place to hide out, such as an air-conditioned bathroom or shower. Reduce the amount of time spent using the stove and oven to keep the house cooler.

Only go outside during the cooler hours of the day, such the early morning or evening. Take regular pauses in places with shade to give your body time to heal.

Even with broken windows, never leave young children, babies, or pets in parked automobiles.

Drinking too much alcohol or sugary drinks might cause you to lose more fluids. In the same way, avoid ingesting really cold beverages since they could result in cramping in your stomach.

Resupply salt and minerals: Excessive perspiration causes the body to lose salt and minerals, which must be added back in.

People may lower their chance of heat stroke and keep themselves healthy throughout the summer by taking these preventative steps.
