2.5k Shimla defaulters will not get a 10% property tax refund

The Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has made the decision not to provide around 2,500 homeowners who have fallen behind on their property tax payments with a 10% tax credit.

When a property owner deposits their tax in one lump sum within 15 days of the bill being issued, the corporation gives the refund. But for the last year, the roughly 2,500 taxpayers have not paid their property taxes.

The organization collects the property tax from 31,683 homeowners in the municipality. The property owners are now receiving their property tax invoices from the company for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.

According to SMC Joint Commissioner Neeraj Mohan, tax defaulters were receiving reminders.

According to the regulations, he added, the connections to the water and power supplies are severed if the building owner does not pay the tax even after getting the third notification.

He stated, “Up until now, the corporation has given orders to cut the water and electricity supply of more than 50 building owners in the town for failing to pay the property tax.”

He added that as soon as the home owners’ connections to the water and power supplies were severed, they consented to pay their property taxes in installments.
