Today saw the opening of a new facility by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for the purpose of testing and evaluating sonar systems that would be mounted on Navy vessels, submarines, and helicopters.

Sonar is used to track out hostile undersea submarines.

At Kulamavu, Kerala’s Underwater Acoustic Research Facility, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the DRDO, officially launched the facility. Named the “Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization and Evaluation,” the Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory of the DRDO developed it. According to the Ministry of Defence, the technique represents a significant leap in naval technology. It would meet the requirements of sample analysis and data processing in contemporary, well-equipped scientific labs.
