A Senior Railway Official Starts an Investigation Into the Madurai Train Coach Fire

A M Chowdhary, Southern Circle Commissioner of Railway Safety, started his investigation into the train compartment fire tragedy here on Sunday.

Chowdhary told reporters in response to a query that he could not now perceive any conspiracy aspect. The senior official said that he interviewed passengers who were receiving medical attention here for their wounds and documented their accounts of how the fire spread throughout the bus that was parked in a yard.

He estimated that the investigation and submission of the report to the authorities would take at least a month. Chowdhary examined the train carriage that had caught fire on Saturday, killing nine persons and injuring eight more. The train coach was stationed at this railway yard.

A member of the Railway Board and a Southern Railway official participated in the investigation, which focused on determining what caused the fire. According to airport authorities, the nine accident victims’ remains were flown earlier today to Lucknow, the state capital of Uttar Pradesh.

Regulations governing railroad accidents require a statutory investigation after any incident that results in fatalities, severe injuries, or significant damage to railroad property.
