Amarjit Singh Samra now opposes Punjab’s former chief minister Charanjit Channi’s Jalandhar ticket

With senior politician and former minister Amarjit Singh Samra opposing the ticket to former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi from Jalandhar, Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary has gained support in the Congress.

“I don’t understand why there wasn’t even one Dalit leader from Jalandhar that the Congress might have selected to run in the election. Dalits make up about 42% of the population of Jalandhar. Where was the party going to need to choose an outsider to challenge them from here? In my view, the party needs to reevaluate the ticket and give it to a local official. He said that Vikramjit could have been a wise choice.

The late Congress MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh’s son, Vikramjit, has so far opposed Channi and challenged MLAs Pargat Singh and Sukhwinder Kotli to secure his electoral success. Samra and the Chaudhary family have become close. “The party has made a huge mistake by fielding Channi in Jalandhar,” he said. The Jalandhar SC community is not pleased with this choice, as they also wanted a local.

Samra said, “When announcing the ticket, the party did not even hold the late MP’s wife, Karamjeet Chaudhary, in high regard. The media reports about Vikramjit’s uprising against Channi on a regular basis. These are not suitable for the gathering. We might forfeit our esteemed Jalandhar seat in this manner.

“People in Jalandhar are worried as to how they would get their works done if they do not get a local MP,” said Samra, who was also the chairman of Markfed. I’ve heard that Channi moved into a residence for a period of two months. He ought to have accepted it for a year at the very least if he really intended to help the people.

Paradoxically, Samra is linked to Pargat Singh, the MLA for Jalandhar cantonment. The grandson of Samra is married to the latter’s daughter.
