Chandigarh cracks down on the illicit water tanker trade

The Municipal Corporation (MC) is taking strong action against contractors who are unlawfully taking subsurface water and utilizing it for business reasons. Today, the MC filed DDRs against three of the offenders at Daria village, Mauli Road. DDRs were filed against a private contractor in Kajheri village and the Tiwana water tanker yesterday.

Three enterprises, Mahadev Service Station, Hare Krishna Service Station, and Manu Service Auto Center, were discovered to be washing automobiles and other commercial vehicles at the Daria village site during an inspection by a team of MC engineers. The group called the police and reported the DDRs as soon as they cut off their water supply.

In Kajheri village, the crew also dug out the borewell of Tiwana Tankers and filed a DDR against the proprietor.

The MC also discovered nearly eight tubewells outside of Laldora at Dadu Majra village, Dadu Majra colony, Kajheri village, Kishangarh, Daria, Dhanas, and Sarangpur. These tubewells were filling water in tankers to be supplied to the public for drinking and other purposes as part of its campaign to stop unnecessary groundwater extraction.

The Chief Engineer, UT, has been contacted by the MC to inquire about approval for tubewells and to take appropriate action.

The group has suggested that the city’s seventeen tubewells be closed.
