ED summons in liquor case; Arvind Kejriwal’s appeal will be heard by Delhi High Court today

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s appeal against the summonses he received from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to a money laundering case involving excise policies is scheduled to be heard by the Delhi High Court on Monday.

Kejriwal has challenged the constitutionality of several PMLA provisions pertaining to arrest, questioning, and bail. Kejriwal was taken into custody by the agency on March 21 after the high court denied him temporary immunity from coercive action.

The case is scheduled for hearing before Justice Manoj Jain and Justice Suresh Kumar Kait’s bench.

The next day, the court said it was not inclined to provide temporary respite and ordered the ED to handle Kejriwal’s request for protection from arrest. Kejriwal was taken into prison by the ED later that evening and is still under judicial supervision.

According to the federal inquiry agency, the accused worked with Kejriwal to create the excise policy that was later abolished, giving them unfair advantages in return for bribes to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Kejriwal’s appeal brings up a number of issues, one of which is whether or not anti-money laundering regulations apply to political parties. It claims that the PMLA’s arbitrary processes are being used to sway the results of elections in the governing party’s favor at the center.

The appeal claims that the ED, which is under the supervision of the Union government, has been “weaponized,” describing the petitioner as a “vocal critic” of the governing party and a partner of the India alliance.
