Father Says Arrested IIT Guwahati Student “Had Other Plans” Despite Alleged ISIS Links

Touseef Ali Farouqui, the jailed student at IIT Guwahati who is accused of having connections to the terrorist organization ISIS under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, allegedly told his family in Delhi that he intended to stop his studies and would be pursuing other options. The student’s father, Asmat Ali Farouqui, revealed this information to the media outside the court where his son was taken for formalities.

Fourth-year B Tech student Touseef Ali Farouqui was detained on March 24 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He is still being held by the police and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday after the conclusion of his police detention.

“He was in Delhi with my wife, but I live in Siwan, Bihar.” The student’s father added, “My son had informed her about not continuing with his studies as he had other plans.”

According to his father, there were things that his wife knew about but he didn’t tell anybody else. The mother of the accused, who went to court with her father, declined to comment to the press.

The senior Farouqui said, “There was definitely something that his mother knew about but kept that hidden from the others.”

Under many provisions of the Indian Penal Code and UAPA, the accused was taken into custody on March 23 at Hajo in the Kamrup district and was taken into custody the next day.

Inspector General Parthasarathi Mahanta of the Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) claims that during the student’s questioning, reliable evidence connecting him to ISIS was found, which resulted in his detention.

This happened three days after Anurag Singh, also known as Rehan, and ISIS India chief Haris Farooqi, also known as Harish Ajmal Farukhi, were taken into custody in the Dhubri area.

It was stated that the student had written an email expressing his desire to join ISIS, and that an ISIS-like black flag had been discovered in his dorm room, waiting to be verified by organizations that work with banned clothing.
