FM meets privately with US Treasury Secretary to talk about G20 goals

Friday’s bilateral discussion between US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman covered G20 themes.

The two-way encounter happened the day before the G20 Leadership Summit, which will start here on Saturday.

“FM Smt. @nsitharaman and Secretary Ms. @SecYellen discussed key #G20 priorities and bilateral cooperation between the two democracies to address pressing global economic and financial issues,” the finance ministry said in a post on X (previously Twitter).

On Thursday, Yellen said that Russia’s conflict against Ukraine had resulted in the senseless loss of life and was in direct opposition to all of the G20’s principles.

She had said in a post on X Thursday that “we will rally our partners to maintain our collective economic support for Ukraine as well as impose severe costs on Russia.”

“India is one of America’s key allies, as @POTUS highlighted last year. My fourth trip to India in ten months will show how close our relationships have become. We anticipate that bilateral commerce between our two nations will increase even more in the next year, according to Yellen.

In the midst of the G20 Leaders Summit, Sitharaman also met with the Nigerian ministers of finance and economy, Adebayo Olawale Edun, and budget and national planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

The Ministers spoke about a variety of topics that they both found interesting.

“FM Smt. @nsitharaman conveyed India’s continued support to the people of Nigeria in their development trajectory through Indian lines of credit, cooperation between Central Banks, collaboration with NITI Aayog @NITIAayog and exchange on best practices,” the finance ministry said in a post on X.

According to the statement, Minister Edun praised the significant contribution made by Nigerians of Indian ancestry to the growth of the Nigerian economy.
