IKEA was fined for charging a guy in Hyderabad for a paper carry bag

IKEA’s Hyderabad location has been ordered by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Rangareddy, to pay a Hyderabad resident ~1,000 as compensation for upsetting her over the price of a paper carry bag.

The customer complained that after spending ~816 on things, the Swedish firm, which has its headquarters in Delhi, India, did not provide him a carry bag. The customer also claimed that since he was forced to purchase a $20 bag with IKEA’s name emblazoned on it, he was being utilized as an ambassador for the company’s goods. He said that it is equivalent to unfair trading practices.

IKEA defended itself by saying that it never requires its consumers to buy carry bags and that they are welcome to bring their own bags inside the shop.

The Commission did rule, however, that IKEA was not permitted to charge for carry bags that display its insignia.

In order to raise awareness about the Consumer Protection Act, it also directed the conglomerate to deposit ~5,000 in the Consumer Legal Aid Account of the Commission. It further stated that all orders must be followed within 45 days of April 8; otherwise, an interest rate of 24% percent per year will be applied to the ~5,000.
