In Kanpur, Adani Defence & Aerospace opens the biggest ammunition and missile factory in South Asia

India’s top private defense company, Adani Defence & Aerospace, has opened two facilities in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, to produce missiles and ammunition, enhancing the nation’s defense capabilities.

In the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Defence and the Uttar Pradesh government, the gigantic facilities—dubbed the biggest in South Asia—were officially opened on Monday by Chief of Army Staff Gen. Manoj Pande, Lt Gen. N. S. Raja Subramani, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

With a total area of more than 500 acres, the Kanpur site is expected to become one of South Asia’s biggest integrated munitions production complexes. It is designed to meet the demands of law enforcement, paramilitary groups, and the armed services by producing a wide variety of superior small, medium, and large caliber ammunition. The plant has already started producing ammunition in small calibers; the first 150 million rounds produced are expected to provide 25% of India’s yearly needs.

The facilities’ debut took place five years after the Indian Air Force’s landmark “Operation Bandar” bombing on Balakot, which demonstrated India’s strategic aggressiveness against foreign adversaries.

The chief minister expressed his satisfaction in the event by saying, “This is a moment of great pride.” The facility is proof of Uttar Pradesh’s development into a major industrial hub and our dedication to the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” plan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The biggest investment in the Uttar Pradesh military Corridor has been made by Adani Defence & Aerospace, and this will be vital to the development of a strong military ecosystem. The fact that activities began within 18 months following land allocation is promising. When the missiles and ammunition produced at these sites contribute to national security, that will be a proud occasion.

The need of missile and ammunition self-sufficiency was emphasized by General Manoj Pande, especially in view of current geopolitical events. In an important step toward India’s defense industry self-sufficiency, he commended Adani Defence & Aerospace for its large investments and commitment to indigenizing vital defense technology.

“Recent developments in geopolitics have highlighted the need of having a steady supply of ammunition from domestic sources in case of a protracted war. Users are now more confident in their ability to rely on Indian private sector for essential military supplies due to Adani Defence & Aerospace’s readiness to indigenize critical technology and huge investments. This complex represents a significant turning point in India’s defense industry transition towards independence,” he said.
