PM Modi laments the passing of the Eastern Church of Believers
May 9, New Delhi, India: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed my condolences on the passing of Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan, Metropolitan of Believers Eastern Church. According to Prime Minister Modi, Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan would be remembered for his contributions to society and attention to raising the standard of living for the oppressed.
PM Modi wrote on X, saying, “I am saddened by the death of Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan, Metropolitan of Believers Eastern Church. His contributions to society and his concentration on raising the standard of living for the oppressed will go on in his memory. My prayers are with his family and all Believers Church followers. May peace be upon his soul.”
According to a statement issued by Believers Eastern Church, he died in a hospital from heart arrest a few days after being hurt in an accident while taking a morning stroll in the US.
The Believers Eastern Church released a statement in which they said, “He died in a Dallas, Texas, hospital where he was undergoing treatment after his accident from sudden cardiac arrest. The Holy Synod will share further details when the time comes. May his memories live on forever!”
In Niranat, Upper Kuttanad, Moran Mor Athanasius Yohan was born into a typical agricultural family. As a youngster, he began preaching the Bible, and at sixteen, he enlisted in Operation Mobilization.
He started studying theology in Dallas, Texas, in 1974. preaching the gospel and leading a priestly life as a pastor. He married Gisella, a German national working in the same industry. In 1978, he and his spouse discovered Gospel for Asia, which marked a sea change in their lives.
After a protracted stay overseas, Yohannan made the decision to operate from the Thiruvalla headquarters as the company expanded. To unite the religious community worldwide, the Believers’ Conference was established in 2003. In the Athuravesana arena, the church established itself as a major player.
In Thiruvalla, a medical college was also established to provide affordable healthcare for the general public. Following the name change to Believers’ Eastern Conference in 2017, KP Yohannan was given the honor of being the church’s first global metropolitan.
