On Sunday, President Droupadi Murmu thanked government workers on Government Services Day and expressed his trust that they would uphold the “nation first” mentality in serving their fellow people.

April 21 is designated as Civil Services Day, a time for bureaucrats to reaffirm their dedication to public service and quality in their profession, as well as to the cause of people.

On this public service day, greetings to all public workers! You have continued the great tradition of dedicating yourself to the unwavering pursuit of the nation’s advancement. As she said, “Our civil services are always faced with the challenge of quickly adapting to the dynamic environment, while upholding the three fundamental values—dignity, integrity, and incorruptibility – Sardar Patel highlighted in his speech on this day in 1947.” “I have no doubt that you will go on serving your fellow people in the nation-first attitude. Murmu wrote on X, “My best wishes to you in this endeavour.”

The day honors the 1947 speech given by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of independent India, at Metcalf House in Delhi to Administrative Services Officers awaiting promotion. The public officials were described by him as the “steel frame of India.” On April 21, 2006, the first Civil Services Day event took place at Vigyan Bhawan.
