Teachers are under pressure during test season

Mangaluru: The state government has been awarded permission by the Karnataka High Court to go on with holding the summative assessment examinations for classes 5, 8, and 9. Teachers at high school, however, are worried about whether it would be possible to administer these tests for classes 8 and 9 in addition to the SSLC exams, which begin on Monday.
The tests for the SSLC are scheduled to begin on March 25 and end on April 6.

Teachers have very little time to get ready and give the eighth and ninth graders’ examinations according to this schedule. 88 high schools in all have been chosen to serve as SSLC test centres. There have only been two examinations administered so far for the centralised evaluations for grades 5, 8, and 9.
“How can we conduct exams for classes 8 and 9 when the SSLC exam starts on March 25 and the academic year ends on April 10?” said a senior teacher.
High school instructors overseeing the SSLC examinations have already been allocated by the department of school education and literacy; some of them are also involved in election-related work. Due to the resulting teacher shortage, the department has decided to recruit the assistance of elementary school teachers.
It was the instructors’ hope that the tests would take place at least one week ahead of the SSLC exams.
According to a department of education official, some instructors are preparing for the next election, while others are concentrating on the SSLC examinations. “To help with last-minute preparations and keep students occupied until the SSLC exams are over, the teachers at SSLC are dedicated to offering special classes to students during breaks between exams,” the official said.
A lot of parents whose kids are in classes 5, 8, and 9 have complained about their kids being less interested in their academics, and they blame the uncertainty around the test schedule for this. Venkatesha Subraya Patagara, DDPI, and Dakshina Kannada were unavailable for comment despite many efforts to reach her.
