TMC giving ‘anti-national elements’ refuge: Anurag Thakur

Union Minister Anurag Thakur said on Monday that the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is in power in West Bengal, is harboring “anti-national forces” and “supporting” people who are abusing women.

The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting questioned reporters during his election campaign in Siliguri, asking why terrorists who carry out their acts in the state or nationwide “find protection and shelter in West Bengal.”

He questioned, “Why is this so?”

TMC spokesman and West Bengal minister Shashi Panja accused Thakur of “suffering from illusion” and denied the claims he had made.

Two major suspects in the Rameshwaram Cafe explosion case from West Bengal were taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday, including the mastermind. This development led to a verbal spat between the governing TMC and the BJP in the state.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the culprits were apprehended as a result of the state police’s swift response, despite the BJP’s accusations that the TMC had turned West Bengal into a “haven of terrorists”.

“Under the nose of Mamata Banerjee, corruption thrives, and atrocities on women are overlooked,” Thakur said.

In addition, Thakur mentioned incidents of sexual assault, land grabs, and extortion against women in Sandeshkhalii, a district in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas.

In response to Thakur’s accusations, Panja said, “It seems like you are trying to create an illusion or you are trapped in one. If not, you are not conscious of the truth. You have to admit that this is a true case where the cops have merely made arrests. You have a reputation for spreading hate speech, Thakur.”

She also brought up the subject of Bengal’s unpaid debt.

She said, “Why has the disbursement of funds been halted?” The TMC alleges that the federal government has withheld Rs 1.6 lakh crore in West Bengal’s dues, which are justifiable rights from the state’s taxes earned.
