To Be Used At Government Yoga Day Events, 34,000 Yoga Mats Were Purchased From Tribal Craftspeople

34,000 yoga mats, all of which were purchased from local tribal artists to promote their wares, will be used during official celebrations of International Yoga Day on Wednesday.

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (TRIFED), a national cooperative organisation with the mission to promote the socioeconomic advancement of the nation’s tribal people, has acquired yoga mats adorned with patterns and motifs typical of different tribal communities.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, these mats will be used for a variety of events, seminars, and training sessions planned for International Yoga Day.

This programme demonstrates the government’s dedication to empowering tribal tribes and honouring India’s rich cultural history. According to the government, each mat is a colourful example of the rich cultural heritage of India’s many tribes, capturing their tales, folklore, and creative skill.

The delicately woven Madurkathi mats, also known as Madur, which are made in West Bengal from a reed called Madur Kottir are one of the highlighted mats. These mats, which are highly revered for their non-conductive qualities and extraordinary sweat-absorbing capacities, are essential in West Bengal’s hot and muggy atmosphere and play a significant role in religious rites.

The Sabai Grass yoga mats, which represent the close connection between the tribal people of Mayurbhanj, Odisha, and the beautiful surroundings that surround them, will also be on display at the government events. These mats, known for their distinctive composition, provide outstanding comfort and absorbency, making them a practical and essential companion for yoga practitioners and aficionados.

The Indian government hopes to inspire pride in the country’s cultural heritage and empower tribal craftsmen by promoting indigenous handicraft via this initiative.
