Villagers in the Vengaivayal water pollution dispute boycott the Lok Sabha election due to “inaction”

Opposing the state government’s “failure” to identify the people who combined feces in the village overhead tank, even after about a year and a half, several inhabitants of Vengaivayal and nearby Eraiyur in the district abstained from the general election on Friday. Those in Eraiyur did not exercise their right to vote, but roughly 60 Dalit residents of Vengaivayal did so later in the day when authorities promised action. The voting booth, which was put up at a middle school in Vengaivayal, seemed abandoned till Friday night, according to reports.

After authorities made contact with the demonstrators, around 60 out of the 561 electors in the two villages together cast ballots. “Dalit residents of Vengaivayal cast their votes in the evening following continuous talks with the residents,” an official said. They chose to vote as a result of our assurances that the guilty would be apprehended and that local development projects would be funded.” “We were unable to persuade the people of Eraiyur to vote since the youth were incensed and adamant about the boycott.”

Vengaivayal resident Murugan, meantime, stated: “We voted in the hopes that the matter would be handled and the offenders will be apprehended. Peace of mind is all we need. We only reluctantly cast a ballot once the authorities made good on their promise.”

Regarding the boycott, one Eraiyur local said, “We don’t follow hollow pledges. For the previous two years, we have been hearing the same promises. In order to avoid losing their jobs, only village administration workers cast ballots.”
