Weather update: Delhi has another chilly, overcast day with a 4°C low

The lowest temperature dipped to 4 degrees Celsius as the nation’s capital awoke to yet another chilly day. There were delays on a number of planes leaving Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.

“The poor weather has caused my flight to be more than two hours late. But we are unable to place the blame. We are unable to change anything,” a traveler told ANI.

At the New Delhi Railway Station, passengers could be seen waiting as many trains had delays owing to fog-related poor visibility. “My destination is Kerala. My train, the Kerala Express, is running five hours behind schedule,” a traveler reported to ANI.

Kartavya Path was the site of the Republic Day parade practice in the meanwhile.

According to the MeT department, fog is deemed’shallow’ if visibility is 500 meters or less. “Moderate” fog is defined as having visibility of up to 200 meters.’Dense’ fog is applied, so visibility is up to fifty meters. When there is less than 50 meters of vision, it is classified as “very dense.”

According to the meteorological service, visibility in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, Patiala, Ambala, Chandigarh, Palam, Safdarjung (New Delhi), Bareilly, Lucknow, Bahraich, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Tezpur was zero for the first time this winter on Monday.

In the meanwhile, a dense layer of fog covered the city, and people could be seen sitting around bonfires. “We gather around bonfires to stay warm during the chilly months. Since the beginning of January, the temperature has been steadily rising, a guy by the name of Rahimali told ANI. To protect themselves from the icy conditions, a number of individuals sought safety in shelter houses managed by the government. The goal of Delhi’s night shelters is to provide homeless persons who are stranded on the streets and have nowhere else to go during the winter a place to stay. For people in need of refuge, the shelters provide food, hot water, mattresses, and blankets.

Scientist Soma Sen of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) discussed the current weather in Delhi and North India while emphasizing the little shift in the lowest temperature that is anticipated on Tuesday.

“We do not anticipate significant changes in the lowest temperature in Delhi or the rest of North India. The bright sky may result in a one-degree increase, but the fog will still be around. For the next two to three days, Haryana and Punjab may have very chilly daytime temperatures due to the possibility of low cloud conditions extending to the neighboring areas. We don’t anticipate any abrupt changes in the cold or temperature… As a seasonal consequence, the cold will progressively lessen in severity, according to IMD Scientist Soma Sen.

Sen predicted persistent foggy mornings, chilly days, and cold wave conditions throughout the plains for at least the next two days, despite a gradual reduction in the severity of the cold.
