50% of match costs were penalized to Virat Kohli for violating the IPL Code of Conduct

In response to his protests against the umpire’s ruling during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL match against Kolkata Knight Riders, star batsman Virat Kohli was fined half of his match money on Monday.

After being caught off a waist-height full-toss ball by Harshit Rana during Sunday’s one-run defeat by RCB to KKR at Eden Gardens, Kohli was removed from the game.

It was necessary to use the Hawk-Eye technology, which measures height in no-balls. The hitter made contact with the ball just above his waist from what seemed to be a dipping delivery.

At that point, the star batsman, who had hit eighteen off seven balls, was standing just beyond the crease.

When TV umpire Michael Gough measured the height, the ball would have passed Kohli’s waist at a height of 0.92 meters if he had been standing straight at the crease, according to Hawk-Eye technology.

After a heated exchange with the on-field umpire, Kohli stormed off the field.

Angrily, the exasperated Kohli banged on the trash can next to the team changing area.

“At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 21, 2024, during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders, Mr. Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has been fined 50% of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct,” an IPL statement said.

According to IPL Code of Conduct Article 2.8, Kohli committed a Level 1 offense. He took the match referee’s punishment after acknowledging his wrongdoing.

The statement also said, “The match referee’s decision is final and binding for Level 1 breaches of the code of conduct.”

According to Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” is a Level 1 offense.
