India’s T20 World Cup roster: Yashaswi Jaiswal may be left out; Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will start; Riyan Parag will compete?

The argument over who will make India’s selection for the biennial competition is intensifying as the deadline for revealing the provisional team for the 2024 T20 World Cup draws closer. Following reports that the Indian team, led by head coach Rahul Dravid, skipper Rohit Sharma, and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, met to discuss team selection, fresh information from the meeting has surfaced suggesting that the Indian management may choose to start with Sharma and Virat Kohli, leaving upstart Yashaswi Jaiswal and Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill out of the starting lineup.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to open?
According to a report in Dainik Jagaran, Kohli has asked the management for clarification over his prospects of being included in the Indian T20 World Cup team. At this midway point of the competition, Kohli leads the IPL 2024 Orange Cap standings (Most Runs), and the management will find it very difficult to bench the veteran given his present form.

Jaiswal Yashaswi Shubman Gill, to be snubbed Perhaps a backup opener?
That throws a wrench in the proceedings for Jaiswal of the Rajasthan Royals, who has had trouble getting going in the IPL 2024 this year despite having a fantastic Test series against England earlier this year. In contrast, Gill, who often started the innings for India in Twenty20 Internationals with Rohit Sharma, may be demoted to the role of backup opener. With 255 runs from six matches in the IPL 2024, Gill is presently ranked sixth in the IPL 2024 Orange Cap standings. Jaiswal has only scored 121 runs at 17.29 in the seven games.

Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag are the front-runners to join the team.
Along with Shivam Dube of the Chennai Super Kings, Assam’s Riyan Parag, who is having a strong IPL 2024 season with the Rajasthan Royals, might secure a spot as the middle-order enforcer. Parag has scored 318 runs in seven matches at an average of 161.42. Dube has had an incredible season for CSK, smashing 242 runs at a strike average of 163.51 in 6 games. He has been an essential finisher for CSK. If he makes the XI, he should play a similar role for the Indian squad.
