Gujarat Forms Company to Develop Sports Infrastructure with Rs 6,000 Cr Allocated for 2036 Olympics Bid

In the event that India wins the bid for the quadrennial multi-discipline sporting spectacular, the Gujarat government has established a distinct firm and set aside Rs 6,000 crore to construct six sports facilities to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2036, an official said on Tuesday.

According to a senior official of the state government company who wished to remain anonymous, the Gujarat Olympic Planning and Infrastructure Corporation Ltd. is a dedicated organization that was founded around three months ago and has already had one board meeting.

The business has set up a booth at the Vibrant Gujarat Trade Show 2024, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened in Gandhinagar on Tuesday.

The company’s main responsibility will be the development of an area close to 350 acres in size that surrounds the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in the Motera neighborhood of Ahmedabad.

Notably, the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world in terms of seating capacity, is located in the still-under-construction sports enclave.

“We have designed a master plan to build the 350-acre Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Motera and nearby regions in order to fulfill Prime Minister Modi’s aim of hosting the Olympics in our nation. Six sports facilities will be built on 350 acres in accordance with the design firm’s concept that was previously chosen in an open bid, the official said.

He said that the project would cost an estimated Rs 6000 crore in total and that the corporation has just released bids to choose companies capable of designing these sports facilities.

The whole area’s layout will be prepared by the businesses that are chosen via bidding. They will also draft a thorough architectural and structural plan for these sports facilities. In order for India to qualify for the 2036 Olympics, the business anticipates that these sports centers will be built by 2030,” he said.

The Ahmedabad municipal commissioner, the CEO of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, and the director general of the Gujarat Sports Authority are among the other members of the board of directors, according to the official. The principal secretary of the Gujarat Urban Development and Housing Department chairs the company.

Notably, senior Gujarati government officials convened twice in December of last year under the direction of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to assess the state’s readiness to host the Olympic Games in 2036.

Gujarat’s administration, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had previously said that it wanted to host the 2036 Summer Olympics and that it would talk to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about holding the quadrennial competition in the western state.

On a recent trip to Gujarat, Shah shared his wish that the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave will host the 2036 Olympics.

At a Mumbai ceremony in October, Prime Minister Modi said that India will put in a bid to host the quadrennial Games.
