On the Unwanted List, Mohit Sharma leads the list of bowlers who have conceded the most runs in IPL history

Mohit Sharma of the Gujarat Titans broke the record for most runs conceded in a match when his 4 overs cost 73 runs in the high-stakes encounter against the Delhi Capitals.

DC’s skipper Rishabh Pant had an unbelievable batting showing during the match on April 24 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, smashing 31 runs in the last over alone.

With his most recent effort, Sharma has surpassed Basil Thampi’s 0/70 against the RCB in 2018 to take the top spot on the list of the most costly spells in IPL history. With no wickets in his destructive stint, Sharma had a difficult evening as DC set a challenging total of 225 runs.

The crucial moment came in the 20th over when Pant, who was still undefeated at 88, attacked Sharma with several strong blows that went over the boundary. The over was full of boundaries, which helped to push both Pant’s score and Sharma’s stats to an unprecedented level.

This swung the tide in the Delhi Capitals’ favor by putting up a total that proved to be only 4 runs too much for the Gujarat Titans to chase down in a thrilling match.

Many people have discussed and analyzed Mohit Sharma’s record-breaking stint, with professionals and fans alike drawing comparisons to other high-scoring IPL innings. Notable instances of bowlers having difficult outings recently include Yash Dayal’s 0/69 for GT against KKR in 2023 and Reece Topley’s 0/68 for RCB against SRH.

This regrettable record has reminded fans of previous notable high-run overs in IPL history and highlighted the unpredictability of T20 cricket, when a single over can drastically alter the course of a match. Harshal Patel’s 37 runs for RCB versus CSK in 2021—which featured a fury from Ravindra Jadeja—remain the most costly last over in IPL history.

Even though Sharma’s stint broke records, it is a clear reminder of the difficulties and demands bowlers confront in the intense, high-stakes atmosphere of the Indian Premier League. Teams and players will surely try to learn and adjust from such performances as the season goes on, trying to strike a balance between aggressive bowling and strategic bowling to prevent such expensive overs in subsequent games.
