Former Selector Praises ‘Match-Winner’ Gill: “He Has All Necessary Qualities to Play for India for a Long Time”

The much anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia is quickly approaching, and rumors regarding potential squad lineups have already started. Following the completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Indian contingent landed in the UK and started practicing at The Oval, the location for the marquee match. While attention will be on the older players, fans and pundits will also be watching closely for Shubman Gill, who has recently been in excellent form.

With the bat in hand, Gill has had a fantastic IPL season. With 890 runs and three hundreds, the Gujarat Titans’ opening batsman won the Orange Cap award. Prior to that, the young Indian batsman had recorded a double-century in ODIs. Later, in the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad, against Australia, he struck a century.

According to former India selector Dilip Vengsarkar, Gill is one of the best young players now competing for his nation and knows all the necessary strokes by heart.

“Shubman Gill is a superb cricket player. We have high hopes for him. For India, he has a highly promising future. He is a really talented athlete. He has grown into a match-winner, has a terrific temperament, and has all the other attributes needed to play for India for a very long period, according to Vengsarkar.

The former selector said “No, not at all” when asked whether Gill needed to change his batting style. If you pay close attention to his hitting, you’ll see that the majority of his strokes follow the instructions. Even in T20 cricket, these are all cricketing strokes. He is an all-format player because of this.

Gill had already stepped in for an underperforming KL Rahul during the Australia Tests in the last two matches in Indore and Ahmedabad. Despite being included in the 15-man team for the ICC WTC final, the latter was eventually declared ineligible owing to an injury he sustained during the IPL. Ishan Kishan, a batsman and wicketkeeper, has taken Rahul’s spot in the lineup.
