Second Test between Australia and the West Indies: Mitchell Starc surpasses 350 test wickets on the first day at Gabba

Mitchell Starc, an Australian pacer, took three wickets on the first day of the second test against the West Indies at the Gabba on Thursday, becoming the fifth bowler from Australia and the 27th overall in the history of the game to capture 350 test wickets.

The Australian seamer, 33, achieved the milestone when he got wicketkeeper Alex Carey to catch Alick Athanaze behind.

He had previously taken the scalp of Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the Windies opener, when Steve Smith caught him at slip.

With the last ball of the day-night match before the first break, Starc eliminated Justin Greaves, taking the score to 351.

Starc is an expert in the day-night version of the game, having taken 64 wickets at an average of 18 in his 12 pink-ball Test matches. The fact that Australia has won each of his 11 prior pink-ball Test matches is even more astonishing.

The West Indies won the toss and chose to bat first, but when Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins each took a wicket to add to Starc’s heroics, they were reduced to 64-5.

After a convincing victory in Adelaide in the first Test of the two-match series, Australia now leads the touring Windies 1-0 in the series.

In Adelaide, the Australians easily defeated the visitors by 10 wickets. They had earlier restricted the West Indies to only 188 runs in the first innings, and they then took a 95-run advantage into the second innings with a total of 283 runs.

For the Australians, Travis Head, a left-handed hitter, stood out for his 119-run strike that balanced their innings.

The Windies finished their second innings with a total of 120 runs, and they were easily defeated by the hosts, who ended the match without losing a single player in the process.
