The India Open International Karate Championship began today in Delhi

The Indian Karate Federation is hosting the India Open International Karate Championship at the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi. The event, which began on August 4, will go through August 6.

All states are sending participants and are covering their own costs. The competitors carried big aspirations with them, the most of them are tied to winning a national medal and opening additional doors for karate in the country.

Statesman learnt about the participants’ outstanding achievements and hard work in this combat sport over the previous several years through talks with coaches and players from many states competing in the tournament.

Karnataka said that they learnt karate from Japanese experts on a visit to Japan for the World Championships in 2019, and claimed they won two bronze and one silver medals representing the country in the Asia-Pacific Championships in 2018. However, the state has yet to place a high value on the sport.

The championship was not only attended by Indian states, but also by nations such as Nepal, who transported remarkable talent across borders to promote the sport in their country.

Mr Kuldeep Wasni (Delhi Olympic President), Mr Kuldeep Vats (President), and Mr Sanjeev Jangra (General Secretary) lit the lamp to begin the opening ceremony, which was followed by a march past of each state with a poster bearer representing the state. The event started with the singing of the national anthem, followed by the competition. The three days were separated into age divisions, with groups under the age of 13 showing their skills and formations in front of the judges on the first day. The jury selected them based on their overall methods out of 20, with each judge receiving five points.

Due to the enormous number of applicants and systems, the competition will use a system based on multiple sub-groups. The first day was devoted to the sub-junior division, which included age groups of up to 13 years. Following the first day, the second day will concentrate on the junior and cadet age categories of 16-17 and 14-15. The last day will mostly concentrate on the senior group, which includes those aged 18 and older. The first, second, and third places in each category will be given trophies, karate kits, medals, and a T-shirt as a keepsake and inspiration for karate students to one day compete in international karate tournaments.
