31-year-old Unintentionally Giving The Bangladeshi Community Rs. 12 Lakh Rather Than Rs. 12,000, a California Man Does

A California man made a mistake while contributing to a social cause, which started a positive sequence of events that he shared with the globe on Reddit. The guy and his spouse had just moved to a new San Francisco apartment building when they met their 77-year-old neighbor, Jeff Dunan, a Hindu priest. During their talk, Dunan spoke about his work with Bangladesh Relief, a group that helps underprivileged people in northern Bangladesh by providing them with food, clothes, and necessities.

The guy, Michael, 31, decided to donate to Dunan’s GoFundMe campaign after being intrigued by the topic. He thought about it for a while and decided that $150 (around Rs 12,432) would be a suitable gift. Michael explained his reasoning, saying, “I saw it as a neighborly gesture and believed in the cause.” He would rather be anonymous so that others might continue to concentrate on the cause rather than on him.

Not long after he donated to the GoFundMe campaign in February 2022, Michael’s credit card provider promptly notified him of an unusually big transaction. When he opened the mail, he saw that GoFundMe had charged him an astounding $15,041 (around Rs 12.46 lakh).

It all became obvious eventually. The first two digits of Michael’s credit card number were 4 and 1. He added that while his cursor was still in the contribution box, he unintentionally started inputting his credit card information. Michael quickly called GoFundMe’s support line to report the unintentional gift. Hearing that he would get his money returned for the incident in three to seven business days gave him a sense of relief.

But before Michael could get his money back, Shohag Chandra, the charity’s program manager from Bangladesh, started sending him a lot of Facebook messages and alerts thanking him profusely for his substantial gift. “The guy had sent me a video of himself from Bangladesh, surrounded by dozens of impoverished and hungry people clutching bags of food, expressing their gratitude to me by name,” Michael said in a Reddit post.

Upon viewing this, Michael began to feel bad about having to withdraw the hefty payment. For this reason, he chose to give $1,500 extra to the cause after receiving his initial payment back, which he did. According to Michael, Dunan and his Bangladeshi coworkers were still appreciative of the money he gave. Many others were moved by Michael’s unintentional contribution and his following efforts to make apologies, leading them to give to the GoFundMe campaign. Due to the fact that so many individuals decided to give themselves in gratitude for his act of compassion, the original goal’s effect was amplified.
