No longer do all passenger cars have six airbags? What the Transport Minister Has to Say

In an unexpected statement, Union Minister for Road Transport Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday that the government has no plans to make six airbags a requirement for all vehicles in India. The declaration was made by the minister who proposed the need for 6 airbags in passenger vehicles beginning in 2022, with enforcement beginning in October of this year.

The minister said, “We don’t want to make the need for six airbags in automobiles obligatory since people are cautious, when speaking at an automotive event in New Delhi. People could choose to drive a vehicle with six airbags over others. The choice is between the consumers and the producers.

What Nitin Gadkari Has To Say About the Airbag Rule

Gadkari tweeted in September 2002 in response to the Indian government’s requirement for six airbags: “Considering the global supply chain constraints being faced by the auto industry and its impact on the macroeconomic scenario, it has been decided to implement the proposal mandating a minimum of 6 Airbags in Passenger Cars (M-1 Category) w.e.f. 01st October 2023.”

A regulation governing airbag standards was published in 2021, and all auto makers were notified that all cars built after the specified date had to be fitted with front seat airbags.

How do airbags work?

It is a specific kind of vehicle restraint device that is mounted within the dashboard and operates after a collision or other mishap. It serves as a safety measure and lessens the possibility of both drivers and passengers suffering serious injuries in collisions.
