Sensex and Nifty close on weaker notes today, as the rupee ends flat at 83.27.

On October 18, the main Indian indexes finished worse, with the Nifty closing below 19,700. The Nifty was down 140.40 points or 0.71 percent at 19,671.10 at closure, while the Sensex was down 551.07 points or 0.83 percent at 65,877.02.

 

Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, NTPC, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank were among the biggest losses, while Cipla, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, and SBI Life Insurance were among the winners.

 

Except for the auto and pharmaceutical industries, all other sectoral indexes finished in the red, with losses of 0.5–1 percent in the power, information technology, oil & gas, metal, real estate, and banking sectors.

 

A total of 1424 shares rose, 2144 fell, and 137 were unchanged. The BSE Smallcap index dropped 0.3 percent and the Midcap index lost 0.8 percent.

 

Despite weak global indications, the major indexes in India started lower on October 18. The Nifty fell 22.70 points or 0.11 percent to 19,788.80, while the Sensex down 100.38 points or 0.15 percent to 66,327.71.

 

On the Nifty, notable gainers included Cipla, Hindalco, ONGC, Infosys, and Grasim, while notable losers included LTIMindtree, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, and Tata Consumer.

 

The Indian Rupee, on the other hand, maintained its previous close of 83.26 and finished unchanged at 83.27 per dollar.
