The Indian crew’s SOS saved “many lives” after the collapse of the Baltimore Bridge after the cargo ship’s pilot did all in his power to avoid collision

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, hailed the Indian crew as “heroes” for their timely warning that prevented a cargo ship from colliding with the Baltimore bridge on Tuesday morning, thus “saving many lives.”

The container ship “Dali,” flying the flag of Singapore, crashed with a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore while being piloted by two pilots, according to the ship’s owners. Every member of the crew, including the two pilots, was found, and no injuries were reported.

According to the New York Post, one of the pilots “did everything that he could have done” to slow the ship and stop it from drifting toward the bridge. The American Pilots Association’s executive director and general counsel, Clay Diamond, disclosed this. Since the tragic fall of the Francis Scott Key bridge, the Association of Maryland Pilots and Clay Diamond have maintained regular contact.

“MAYDAY”
At before 1:30 am (local time) on Tuesday, the Dali freight, which was sailing out of Baltimore Harbor toward Sri Lanka, collided with a support pylon of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over the Patapsco River. Almost instantly, a trestled portion of the 2.57 kilometer crossing collapsed into the frigid water, plunging cars and people into the river. Just before the ship crashed, it sent out a “mayday loss of power,” warning Maryland authorities to halt automobiles from crossing the bridge. The ship declared a mayday power outage. Just before collision, the bridge crew stopped traffic. The NYP cited Baltimore Brandon Scott as stating, “They saved lots of lives,” during a news conference.

One of the busiest ports on the US Eastern Seaboard was forced to close after a bridge collapsed in Baltimore Harbor, leaving six workers missing and feared dead despite their quick SOS call. The search and rescue efforts were put on hold for almost eighteen hours after the incident. Because of the cold water and the amount of time that had passed since the accident, US Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said that there was little chance of recovering the missing workers alive.

Colonel Roland Butler of the State Police said that in order to retrieve the workers’ bodies, officials planned to send divers back into the ocean on Wednesday morning. Two survivors were brought to safety by rescuers; one of them was taken to the hospital. According to an earlier US media account, the ship reported a power outage before to collision, allowing authorities to halt traffic on the bridge before it collapsed. These folks are heroes because they are able to prevent automobiles from crossing the bridge. At a lunchtime press conference, Maryland Governor Wes Moore said, “They saved lives last night.”

The mayor of Baltimore described twisted metal streaming upward. It resembled something from an action film. He stated, “It was something you never thought you’d see.” Social media video showed the ship striking the bridge in the dark, with headlights from passing cars apparent as it plunged into the sea and caught fire. The shutdown of one of the busiest shipping routes in the nation until further notice, according to US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, would have a “major and protracted impact to supply chains.” According to port statistics, the Port of Baltimore will handle more automotive freight than any other port in the United States in 2022—more than 750,000 automobiles.
