Trump is in favour of outlawing abortions nationwide at 15 weeks of pregnancy

NEW DELHI: On Tuesday, former US President Donald Trump made it clear that he would be willing to support a countrywide ban on abortions beginning at about 15 weeks of pregnancy. This is the first time that Trump has openly supported a time restriction of any kind on the surgery.
Republicans like Trump have been accused of influencing the rulings of the US Supreme Court by selecting three justices who dissented from the historic abortion rights case Roe v. Wade.

Trump has previously abstained from supporting a specific abortion limit while seeking the presidency for the third time, citing worries about the political fallout. Rather, he raised the prospect of “negotiating” a policy that would provide exceptions for the preservation of maternal life, rape, and incest.
But Trump attacked Democrats for opposing a restriction that would restrict abortions in places where the procedure is legal in a recent radio appearance on WABC’s “Sid & Friends in the Morning” programme. “People are agreeing on 15 weeks now,” he said, alluding to a possible agreement over the duration of such restrictions. And that’s what’s on my mind.”
Trump also noted the long-running controversy over whether state or federal governments should have the authority to enact abortion laws, underscoring that most legal scholars on both sides agree that states should make the final decision on this matter. Trump’s campaign called rumours that he privately supported a ban on abortions after 16 weeks “fake news,” highlighting his willingness to engage in negotiations.
Following his involvement in the Republican primaries in Florida, Trump made hints about future talks on the potential for a 16-week ban. Voters have made abortion rights a key issue, and the Democrats and President Joe Biden’s administration are preparing to highlight the differences between their position and that of Donald Trump in the 2024 race. According to recent polls, the majority of Americans are in favour of legalising abortions up to the 15-week mark, with around half of US people supporting this position.
In conclusion, Trump’s public comments endorsing a nationwide ban at 15 weeks have sparked conversations about the direction of American abortion laws, paving the way for future talks and agreements on this divisive topic.
