Why Israel is adamant on starting the Rafah attack

Due to the possibility of damage to the hundreds of thousands of civilians who are seeking sanctuary in Rafah, the southernmost city of Gaza, Israel is adamant about launching a ground attack against Hamas. This strategy has alarmed people all over the world. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel cannot defeat Hamas and claim “total victory” if it does not take Rafah.

Why Rafah is important
After operations elsewhere destroyed 18 of the terrorist group’s 24 battalions, Israel claims that Rafah is the final significant bastion of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. However, Hamas has regrouped in certain locations and has continued to fire strikes even in northern Gaza, which was the offensive’s initial aim. Israel claims it has to deploy ground soldiers to overthrow Hamas because it has four battalions in Rafah. It’s possible that senior militants are hiding in the city.

Resistance to Israel’s proposal
Without a “credible” plan to evacuate people, the US has advised Israel not to proceed with the operation. According to Egypt, any attempt to force Palestinians into Egypt would jeopardize the country’s peace deal with Israel. State Department Secretary.

Postponement of army deployment
Israel doesn’t seem to be close to deploying soldiers into Rafah in the meantime. This may be the result of continuous efforts to mediate a cease-fire. A Rafah invasion, according to Qatari mediators, would stall those negotiations. Directing the inhabitants to the “humanitarian islands” in central Gaza before to the intended onslaught raises further logistical issues.

Palestinians continue to embrace Hamas strongly.
Despite the conflict, Hamas continues to have strong public support, according to a poll of Gaza-based Palestinians. According to a study by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, located in Ramallah, 71% of Palestinians questioned agreed with Hamas’s October 7 assault on Israel. Additionally, the 70% level of Palestinian satisfaction with Hamas did not change.

Israeli SC prohibits patients’ repatriation
According to CNN, the Israeli Supreme Court has put a temporary stop to a government program that would have sent a number of Palestinian patients who were being treated at hospitals in East Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to Gaza. Following a CNN story on the suffering of Palestinian hospital patients, an Israeli non-profit organization filed a petition, which prompted the ruling.
