32-year-old Cherthala lady perishes after her husband sets her on fire

In Cherthala on Monday, a 32-year-old lady lost her life when her husband set her on fire.

Arathi, the spouse of Shyam G Chandran of Valiyaveetil House in Pattanakkad, passed away at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital (MCH), according to the Cherthala police. The crime has been attributed to familial difficulties.

According to the authorities, the incident happened on Monday at approximately 9.30 a.m. when Arathi was riding her two-wheeler to the financial business in Cherthala, where she worked. Shiam’s car became stuck on a side road that led to her workplace, which is close to the Cherthala Taluk Hospital. He doused her with gasoline and lit her on fire. Before nearby residents put out the fire with water, Arathi fled for about a hundred meters while blazing. They hurried her to the Taluk Hospital and called the police. Arathi was taken to the MCH due to the severity of her burns, where she passed away in the evening, according to Cherthala DySP S Shaji.

Shyam was taken to the MCH after sustaining burns in the fire as well.

Arathi and Shyam, according to the authorities, were married nine years ago and had two kids. They claimed to have been living apart. An officer said, “Last year, Arathi had filed a complaint with Pattanakkad police alleging domestic violence by Shyam, and as a result, a court had ordered her protection.”

Following a complaint from Arathi claiming threats, Shyam was recently taken into custody and then freed on bond. The police have opened an investigation and filed a complaint. For the autopsy, the corpse has been moved to the morgue.
