4 hurt when crackers exploded after a fight during the Navratri procession in Thane, and 1 hurt when stones were thrown

In Thane, Maharashtra, during a procession bearing an image of Goddess Durga as part of the Navratri festival, four people suffered burn injuries after crackers were burst during a dispute between two groups, police said on Monday.

They said that during the altercation, which happened at around 9 p.m. on Sunday, another individual was hurt when a stone was thrown.

On Sunday, the nine-day Navratri holiday got underway. An officer from the Srinagar police station said, citing the FIR, “Some people were carrying the idol in Hanuman Nagar area of Wagle Estate in a procession when a quarrel took place between two groups over the bursting of crackers.”

Someone accidentally popped some crackers at that moment, hurting many around. According to the official, four people suffered significant burn injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment. In addition, according to the police, a guy was hurt when a stone was thrown during the argument.

According to them, 12 unidentified people were charged with offenses under sections 143 (illegal assembly), 147 (rioting), 337 (causing harm by endangering the life or personal safety of others), and 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation) of the Indian Penal Code after receiving complaints from the victims. The police said that no arrests have yet been made.
