500 liquor stores will be closed in Tamil Nadu starting tomorrow

The state-owned spirits distributor Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) has announced that, starting on June 22, 500 retail spirits shops in the state would close as per the Assembly’s order.

V Senthil Balaji, a now-arrested member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, purportedly made the declaration in the House in April 2023 when he was in charge of the Excise department.

Balaji is presently being treated in a hospital for a heart-related condition after being recently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for a cash-for-job fraud.

According to the reports, a government order was issued on April 20, 2023, as ordered by Chief Minister MK Stalin and in response to the House’s declaration. The 500 liquor establishments in Tamil Nadu were identified in this sequence in order to close them.

In a statement to the media, the TASMAC stated: “In order to implement the GO, it has been directed to identify 500 retail outlets across the state and close them from June 22, 20223 onwards.”

“Based on that, the said 500 retail outlets will not operate from June 22,” they said.
