Belittling Maldives leader: India would damage relations with other countries as well

Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid denied rumors that India was supporting him and claimed that the present regime’s denigration of India’s leaders would damage relations with other nations.

Shahid, who is now leading the major opposition MDP, issued a warning that the average Maldivian’s income will suffer as a result of a fallout with India. Regardless of changes in foreign policy, Shahid, who was elected president of the UNGA in 2021–2022, said that the Maldives could not sever ties with India as a regional ally.

He also brought up the episode from January in which three junior ministers denigrated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. Shahid said, “It is not only the relations with India that deteriorate when such remarks are made against Indian leaders,” as they were being fired. Other nations would assess us as well. He accused Mohamed Muizzu, the president of the Maldives, of withholding information on the deals he made with China while he was in Beijing.
