Bengaluru Suburban Rail only received Rs 400 crore, or 31% of the total amount sought for the project

The budget for the Rs 15,767-crore Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project has been set aside for Rs 400 crore, as opposed to the Rs 1,300 crore that was requested for it. This represents around 31% of the project’s required funding.

According to sources at K-RIDE, the nodal agency for carrying out the project, the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) had submitted the proposal to the state.

Only two of the four corridors—Corridor 2 from Baiyappanahalli Terminal to Chikkabanavara and Corridor 4 from Heelalige to Rajanakunte—have received contracts out of the 148.17-kilometer project.

“This sum will definitely not be sufficient as the project is expected to pick up pace this financial year,” a top K-RIDE official told TNIE. Larger invoices for Corridor-2 have begun to arrive, and soon bills for Corridor-4 will follow.

Another official claimed, “Whenever we need funds, the state will give us the additional sum required,” ruling out any influence on the project. Additionally, we have 500 crore rupees left in our external account. Once we’ve used both of them and the amounts that were allotted, we may look for more money.

The Center and the state are contributing equal funds to the project.

There has been no request for tenders for Corridor 1 (KSR Bengaluru City to Devanahalli) or Corridor 4 (Heelalige to Rajanakunte). The deadline has been changed to December 2027.
