Bird flu: More than 20,000 ducks are killed in two panchayats in the district of Alappuzha

In the bird flu-affected panchayats of Edathua and Cheruthana in Alappuzha, more than 20,000 ducks were killed on Friday.

Eight rapid reaction teams (RRTs) were organized under the animal husbandry department, according to department officials, and they finished the culling by nightfall. According to the authorities, kerosene and sugar were used to burn the corpses.

“An additional week of surveillance will be placed on the region. The district government has prohibited the movement of birds from the two panchayats’ afflicted regions to other parts of the district, declaring those areas to be flu-stricken. The sale of duck, chicken, and other bird feed, eggs, and excrement has been prohibited for the next two weeks, an official said.

The existence of the influenza H5N1 subtype Two panchayats’ worth of ducks had a virus found in them. Infected were three farmers as well. By April 12, the ducks were starting to fall. The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal received samples from the deceased birds from the animal husbandry authorities, and on Wednesday, the NIHSAD discovered the virus.
